How is English taught in Australia?

2010-10-15

English is usually taught professionally by qualified ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers in colleges and universities. Sometimes a student will ask for an English tutor to visit them in their own home and ask to practice English with them. The practice lessons can be in the form of conversation, reading and writing. The professional courses that take place at schools, colleges and universities are more formal and offer the student accreditation once successful completion of the course has been achieved.

Usually, ESL students will enroll in professional English Language courses through an institution to make sure that they fulfill all of the requirements necessary to gain a proper and intimate understanding of the English language.

The good thing about students who are studying ESL in Australia is that they try very hard to understand and use the English language. For ESL students in Australia, specifically, the difficulties they face are in trying to understand Australian slang (or colloquialisms) such as: 'G'day' or 'She'll be right'. It can be very difficult for a new arrival to understand the Australian slang.
