My favourite book

I’m reading a book called Anabasis at the moment. It’s about Afghanistan when it was called Bactria and was ruled as a Greek colony.

It is hard today to imagine that the Greeks could have occupied such a rugged terrain and that nothing should remain of that culture.

Something interesting I learnt from the book was that the poppy, from which opium is manufactured, and which western governments are trying to eradicate in order to curb drug addiction in their countries, was first introduced to the region by Alexander the Great, who used its properties to ease the pain of his soldiers who had been wounded in battle.
