One of my hobbies is singing and playing the guitar. In Brazil, where I lived for a long time, there’s a saying in Portuguese “quem canta seus males espanta,” which means “he who sings chases away his demons”, which, to a large extent, is true.

I sang semi-professionally for about 15 years before I gave it up, in order to teach English full-time.

Most people have a hidden desire to be praised, applauded and appreciated. Yet to achieve fame, there’s no doubt about it; you’ve got to be either very good or very lucky – and most of the time, both.

I think I’ve now been cured of my desire for fame, but continue to bash away at my guitar and piano every time that the demons come visiting.
