My First Travels

2011-08-09

These are pictures of Mapulaca. It's a small town in Honduras in Central America. I visited Mapulaca for a month in the summer of 1975, when I was 17 years old. I was a volunteer with a medical program. We were giving immunizations to people who lived in rural areas.

It was the first time I had been outside the United States. It was a memorable experience for a kid from the American suburbs. It was quite unlike anything I'd ever seen before. The people had a traditional agricultural lifestyle, and I saw extreme poverty. I spent much of the time I was there traveling on muleback.

This experience changed my life. It made me want to see other countries and to learn other languages. I've never been back to Mapulaca, but I hope to get there someday.
